The Nurse We All Remember
RIP Brenda Fricker (1945 - 2026)
For so many people, Brenda Fricker will forever be remembered as an Oscar winner or as the Pigeon Lady in Home Alone 2. For me, she was Megan Roach.
Long before I understood what an Academy Award meant or appreciated the extraordinary performance that earned her one in My Left Foot, she was the compassionate, determined nurse at Holby City General. Casualty was essential Saturday night viewing in our house, and Megan became one of those characters who felt real. She wasn’t glamorous, she wasn’t larger than life, she was believable, warm, resilient, and exactly the sort of person you hoped would be there when life was at its toughest.
Only later did I discover the remarkable breadth of Brenda Fricker’s career. Becoming the first Irish actress to win an Oscar placed her among cinema’s elite, yet she always carried herself like someone more interested in the truth of a character than the spotlight that surrounded it. Whether she was standing alongside Daniel Day Lewis, Richard Harris or Macaulay Culkin, she brought an authenticity that could never be taught.
Listening to those who worked with her tells its own story. They speak about her courage, her humour and her honesty as much as her talent. Those qualities shone through in every performance.
Some actors become famous. Others become familiar, the faces that quietly accompany different chapters of our lives. Brenda Fricker was one of those rare performers.
Rest easy, Brenda. You’ll always be Megan to me, and I suspect I’m far from the only one.
