RIP Franco Baresi (1960 - 2026)

Precious few footballers redefine the game itself. Franco Baresi did exactly that.

He never looked like the towering centre half the position tended to demand. Instead, he played with the mind of a chess master and the touch of a playmaker. Every interception felt inevitable, every tackle perfectly judged, every step taken several seconds before everyone else had realised where the game was heading.

For many of us in the early 1990s, Sunday afternoons became appointments with AC Milan, not merely to admire a great team, but to witness a footballer who treated defending as an art form. Baresi made elegance seem practical, composure contagious and intelligence the greatest physical gift of all.

His 716 appearances, six Serie A titles, three European Cups and a World Cup winner’s medal tell only part of the story. The deeper measure of the man lies in the reverence with which generations speak his name. He became woven into the fabric of Milan itself, his famous number six forever stitched into the club’s soul.

Football has always had defenders capable of stopping greatness. Franco Baresi was one of the rare few who embodied it.

The game feels quieter today. Less refined. Less graceful.

Some players are remembered because history records their achievements. Franco Baresi will be remembered because those fortunate enough to watch him never forgot the feeling he left behind.
